I'm Autistic not an Alien! Its my Superpower

.

.

Xavier Waye was diagnosed with functional autism at six years old. That was when the superpower got a name, but for Xavier, anything other people saw as a challenge was completely normal to him. The challenges were simply different from what others expected; like his hyper-sensitivity to clothing touching his skin, or how a slight change in schedule or structure would cause him great frustration. He experiences other quirky differences like his need to eat the same food every day without variation, or his ability to watch the same movie repeatedly and not only recite the lines of each character but also be able to list the real names of the actors playing a character in any movie animated or live action. Xavier's ability to remember details dating back to when he was one and two years old and use those memories and others in between to weave a well-crafted very plausible story is his Superpower. This incredible gift is what helped him tell the story of Firesky and Raven in essentially the same way, every time he was asked, with immense details, since drafting the story for a fourth-grade creative writing assignment.

Xavier is clear about his acceptance and celebration of what others call a disability; he understands that his differences give him superpowers no different than those he reads about in the Comic Books or sees on Movie screens. He is capable of doing things that no one he knows can do, like name all of the characters in the Marvel universe and simultaneously creates a universe in Lego form in ways not yet thought of by the Lego company. He is capable of crafting stories that incorporate history and geographical destinations that he may have only heard about or seen one time on television. He sees his world in silos and focuses on one silo at a time when not distracted from standards society attempts to place on him.

Xavier says he is Autistic not and Alien because over the past thirteen years, in various social situations from school, to church, to sports that people don't know how to deal with him. In his words, "People with treat me like a baby or dog, ignore me, or make fun of me and call me weird." Xavier wants friends but becomes very emotional when discussing the lack of acceptance of who he is. He uses the phrase I'm Autistic not an Alien because he wants everyone to know that he is a fun loving, Lego playing, Movie watching, Storytelling, Smart, Funny person. "People can talk to me like anyone else. If people just accept me as I am and are patient enough to possibly learn something from me, the same way I want to learn something from them, they will see were not all that different but also that our differences make each of us better."
