The world of African American firsts is incredibly vast, and if it were not for the disparaging gap of societal contributions from African Americans versus many of other ethnicities, there would be no need for the distinction in marveling at the enormous contributions African Americans have made in our society. The likes of Maya Angelou in literature and poetry, or Oscar Michaux in filmmaking, Thurgood Marshal as the 1st African American supreme court justice, and Dr. Charles Drew with his work in the field of medicine and the creation of the blood bank. Even in the 21st century, we are still making African American firsts; Barack Obama as the first African American president of the United States. Oprah Winfrey with the first television studio owned by an African American Woman. Serena Williams is the greatest tennis champion of all time. Black Panther; the world’s best-selling superhero movie with a predominately black cast and another set of firsts in director and writer Ryan Coogler, all while being black. African Americans continue to showcase not only their ability to be incredibly resilient in the face of incredible odds, but also our amazing gifts and talents in every aspect of life; education, finance, science, technology, arts, literature, entertainment, medicine, government, and the list continues.
